Kahlmdahl
The seat of the Eastern Kingdoms rose from the ashes of agricultural failure circa the mid 300s AB. Once known for its fertile soil, the farmlands surrounding Kahlmdahl suffered an ecological calamity when farmers eschewed growing native vegetables and trees and embraced cash crops. These foreign crops included various types of tobacco, dragon grass, six-spice peppers, and different plants used to create linens and fabric. This misuse of farmland combined with Kahlmdahl’s infrequent, but heavy, rain storms caused erosion until the lands of the Eastern Kingdoms turned into barren dust bowls. The people of eastern Medehra took out their frustration on the myriad of fiefdoms profiting from their pain. Once the profiteers were purged, the people cried out for clear eyes to guide them through their crucible.
Thus, the Council of Kahlmdahl was formed in a tent set up close to the shore of the Eastern Sea. The council devised a revolutionary crop rotation schedule that helped heal the farmlands of the Eastern Kingdoms. They also reached out to the mariners of the Eastern Coast to teach their people the ways of the sea, which added much needed diversity to a very lopsided economy. The tent that once housed the heroic Council of Kahlmdahl was eventually rolled up to make way for buildings built so high they are said to scrape the sky.
Large swaths of the Eastern Kingdoms are still barren to this day. Progress on rehabilitating these lands was halted once the Almari Empire of the west attempted expansion into the Eastern Kingdoms. The inhospitable badlands outside of Kahlmdahl are now looked upon as homeland defenders. The Almari Empire’s casualty list continues to grow thanks in large part to the drought, food scarcity, and lack of shelter that the barrens are known for.
